The top surface of the cylinder block is the seat for the cylinder liner flange. Engine coolant flows around the cylinder liners in order to keep the cylinder liners cool. Filler band (2) and three O-ring seals (3) seal the coolant in the cylinder block.Steel spacer plate (4) is between the cylinder head and the block. Plate gasket (5) is installed between the spacer plate and the cylinder block. The plate and the gasket accommodate the thickness of the cylinder liner flange.Each main bearing cap (6) is bolted to the cylinder block with two bolts (7).

The water seals are the thickness of the two gaskets and the spacer plate. The coolant exits the cylinder head through water passages into the water cooled exhaust manifold and into the water temperature regulator housing.Spark plug adapter (10) is located between the four valves for each cylinder. Two exhaust valves (11) and two inlet valves (12) are controlled by a camshaft and pushrods. For information on the operation of the valves, refer to Systems Operation, "Valve System Components". Valve guides are pressed into the cylinder heads.Gasket (13) on top of the spacer plate seals the engine oil between the cylinder head and the spacer plate.
