Machines So EquippedThere are several different types of fire resistant fluids that are available for use in the hydraulic system. These fluids will decrease the possibility of a fire hazard if they are accidentally spilled or sprayed on a hot surface. Caterpillar only recommends the use of a water glycol fluid.
When a water glycol fluid is used, the water content must be kept at approximately 40% of the total capacity to give maximum fire resistance and lubrication. The viscosity must be between 150-225 Saybolt Universal Seconds at 38°C (100°F) and a maximum of 5000 Saybolt Universal Seconds at -18°C (0°F). This water glycol fluid should be tested at least every 500 hours or 3 months, whichever comes first, to make sure the condition of the fluid is correct.
It is recommended that fluid temperature indicators and warning horns be installed on machines that use the water glycol
