AllService Magazine, SEPD0780, 18 April 2005, "Automatic Shutoff Systems Are Not Recommended On Mobile Earthmoving Equipment". Disregard this article. See the article that follows. Some stationary engine installations involve the use of an automatic shutoff system. The owners of earthmoving equipment sometimes request that an automatic engine shutoff system be installed on mobile earthmoving machines. While Caterpillar does not endorse the use of specific aftermarket idle shutdown systems, Caterpillar understands their potential benefits, including reducing fuel consumption by limiting idle time and assisting fleet owners in complying with regional regulations. The decision to use certain aftermarket idle shutdown systems is solely that of the customer. In the event that the customer chooses to install an aftermarket idle shutdown system, Caterpillar strongly recommends that the following minimum criteria be considered:
Provide a safe machine state
Provide operator notification
Provide a means for the operator to override
Include an instruction manualProvide A Safe Machine State - If an aftermarket idle shutdown system is used, the customer should ensure that the device will only activate when the machine is in a safe state. This could include (but is not limited to) verification that the machine has the park brake applied and that the transmission is in neutral prior to activating the device. The customer should train operators to follow the Parking and Leaving the Machine instructions provided in theOperation and Maintenance Manual for the machine (for example, grounding implements, neutralizing the implement hydraulics, lowering truck bed, etc).Operator Notification - The device should provide a means to notify the operator that the device is active (for example, an indicator lamp) with adequate lead time for the operator to react if necessary.Provide A Means To Override - The device should provide a means for the operator to override the system if a shutdown is undesirable.Include An Instruction Manual - If an aftermarket idle shutdown system is installed, the customer should provide an instruction manual in the machine that explains the operation of the system.Aftermarket shutdown systems should not be used to shutdown the machine during normal operation or when the machine is not in a safe state.Caterpillar is currently evaluating further offerings of factory-installed and retrofit idle shutdown systems.Caterpillar does not endorse any retrofit or aftermarket idle shutdown system. Caterpillar is not responsible for installation, use, or maintenance of aftermarket idle shutdown systems, or any loss or damage caused by such systems.Systems such as EMS that warn the operator of high temperature, low oil pressure, or other conditions are favorable. However, such systems should not include an automatic shutoff circuit.
