Some 9X3496 Indicator Groups have been assembled incorrectly by the supplier. A zener diode may have been installed backwards. If this occurs, the indicator will not work correctly, the pointer may bang violently against the stop, and the fuel level sender in the tank may be damaged.Solution:
To identify an incorrectly assembled indicator, use the following procedure.1.Disconnect the wiring from the terminals of the gage.2.Use a 6V7070, 6V3030, or 6V7800 Multimeter, set on THE DIODE TEST SCALE.3.Connect the red (+) probe to the "I" terminal of the gage, and the black (-) probe to the "S " terminal. The meter should read "OL".4.Reverse the connections. Connect the red probe to the "S" terminal and the black prove to the "I" terminal. The meter should read between .500 and 1.000.If the meter does not read as described in Steps 3 and 4 above, the gage is either failed or incorrectly assembled and cannot be used.This procedure is adaptable to all machines listed above that are equipped with 9X3496 Indicator Group.COPYRIGHT 1993 CATERPILLAR ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
