Cat Data Link SchematicThe CID 0296 diagnostic is associated with the communication between the Messenger Module and the Transmission ECM. The communication is conducted on the Cat® data-link circuit.An FMI 09 means that the Messenger Module is not receiving communication from the Transmission ECM on the Cat data-link circuit.A CID 0248 FMI 09companion diagnostic code is activated when the CID 0296 FMI 09 diagnostic is activated by the Messenger Module. CID 0248 FMI 09 indicates the Cat data-link is involved.Note: The CID 0248 FMI 09 clears when the CID 0296 FMI 09 diagnostic code is cleared.Possible causes of a CID 0296 FMI 09 diagnostic are:
An ECM or smart device not powering up
Lack of keyswitch input to an ECM or smart device (where applicable)
Excessive data-link circuit noise
Data-link circuit open or poor connection
Software configuration mismatch
Transmission ECM failure, but is unlikely
Messenger Module failure, but is unlikelyNote: A loss of power in the system to the Transmission ECM can cause the Messenger Module to activate this diagnostic code. Ensure that the Transmission ECM is powered up before proceeding with this procedure.Note: Ensure that CID 0296 FMI 09 is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1.
