Schematic of the Boom Retract SolenoidThis diagnostic code is associated with the boom retract solenoid. The FMI 05 means that the machine ECM determined that the current is below normal.The possible causes of this failure are listed here:
The solenoid energizer circuit is open.
The return circuit of the solenoid is open.
The main backup switch has failed.
The solenoid has failed.
The machine ECM has failed. This is unlikely. When this failure occurs, a warning is displayed on the message center and the machine ECM disables the circuit. Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these failures when the original failure is corrected. Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. DO NOT start the engine.
Disconnect the suspect solenoid from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper between contact 1 (wire K949-OR) and contact 2 (wire K952-BR).
Observe the message center.Expected Result:The diagnostic code alternates between the active status and the inactive status as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The VIDS message center may take several seconds before the diagnostic information is updated. This is normal. The diagnostic information may also be viewed with the ET. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code alternates between the active status and the inactive status as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The circuit is correct.Repair: Replace the solenoid. Stop.
NO - The failure remains. The harness or the machine ECM have failed. Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE MAIN BACKUP SWITCH AND THE RETURN CIRCUIT.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Remove the jumper that was placed in the previous test.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J2 from the machine ECM and the machine harness from the boom retract solenoid.
Use the Electronic System Schematic to locate the main backup switch.
Place the main backup switch in the AUTO position.
At the machine harness connector, measure the resistance from contact J2-52 (wire K952-BR) to the solenoid's connector contact 2 (wire K952-BR). Expected Result:The resistance measures less than 5 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5.0 ohms. The machine harness and the main backup switch are correct. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5.0 ohms. There is an open circuit in the machine harness or the main back up switch has failed. Proceed to test step 4.Test Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR OPENS.
The key start switch and the disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.
The machine harness remains disconnected from the machine ECM and the boom retract solenoid.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper between contact 1 (wire K949-OR) and contact 2 (wire).
At the machine harness connector J2, measure the resistance from the contact J2-61 (wire K949-OR) to J2-52 (wire K952-BR). Expected Result:The resistance measures less than 5 ohms. Results:
