Bucket Position Estimation for a Single Receiver Front Shovel
The on-board software is used on both the hydraulic front shovel and the cable front shovel. Regardless of the shovel type, the same dimensions including bucket height, machine width and track length are used to determine bucket position.

Front shovel dimensionsThe front shovel dimensions in Illustration 1 are defined in the MCU. "Maximum Bucket Reach" and "Point Sheave" are best determined by trial and error. These dimensions are determined to suit the most common activity of the machine. The dimensions can be changed according to the activity of the front shovel. The point sheave position for a cable front shovel usually remains fixed. Although the hydraulic front shovel does not have a point sheave, a point sheave must still be defined. Since the point sheave is not fixed for a cable front shovel, bucket position estimates are likely to be less consistent than estimates for a hydraulic front shovel.Other parameters are calculated, such as the satellite receiver position, the arc length between successive satellite receiver positions, and the center of radius. These calculations are used to update the machine position. Front Shovel Loading and Rotation Parameters
There are several parameters that are used to determine when the front shovel is loading. These parameters are also used to determine the center of rotation of the front shovel. The on-board software automatically uses the default parameters. The following settings allow the default parameters to be customized for different front shovel machine types.Front Shovel Stop Velocity - Sets the maximum rotational velocityFront Shovel Load Distance - Sets the angle that the machine must rotate before the shovel is loadedFront Shovel Load Time - Sets the minimum time that a shovel must be stopped in the face to be considered loadingFront Shovel Calibration
The front shovel must be calibrated before tracking and material identification can occur. Until the front shovel is calibrated, the icon of the machine appears as a filled octagon. The calibration determines the center of rotation, as discussed above. The machine must be rotated back and forth through a small arc. When calibration is successful, the icon becomes a front shovel. If the machine is both trammed and rotated at the same time, the icon is reverted to the filled octagon. The calibration to determine the center of rotation must be repeated after the machine is trammed and rotated at the same time. Recalibration is not required if the machine is trammed only. Rotation can start after the machine has stopped tramming.Press the "Calibrate" button to force a recalibration at any time.Front Shovel Activity Selection
The following settings are used with front shovel activity selection.Front Shovel Activity Params - Used to modify the maximum bucket reach, toe radius and point sheave. These dimensions are changed when the front shovel activity is changed.ReferenceFor additional details on front shovel configuration settings, refer to the MCU Help file.
