General Duty fabricated idler with no lateral gusset welds
The new fabricated idlers have plate steel sidewalls and lateral gussets welded to an induction hardened ring-rolled rim. The four lateral gusset welds are what structurally and visually differentiate the new fabricated idlers from D8 General Duty fabricated idlers. Refer to Illustration 1 and Illustration 2.

Existing cast or forged idler with center web
The new fabricated idlers and existing cast or forged idlers are acceptable for use on the machines within the listed serial numbers. However, D8 General Duty idlers should not be used in high impact applications or on Pipelayers.The new idler design has the same tread diameter and wear life properties as the existing cast or forged idlers. When the fabricated idlers are worn, the idlers can be rebuilt by following SEBF8552, "Idler Weld Rebuild Procedure".The fabricated idler contains the same shaft, bearings, seals, retainers, and hardware as the existing cast and forged idlers.Note: It is acceptable to mix fabricated, forged, or cast idlers on the same machine.
