The purpose of inlet relief valve is preventing damage to the torque converter when the engine is started and the oil is cold.Under normal operation, oil flow from the torque converter charging section of the power train oil pump enters the lubrication distribution manifold at port (10). The oil fills chamber (1). The oil then flows through port (4) to the torque converter. A small amount of the oil flows through orifice (5) in order to be combined with oil that enters through port (6) from the power train oil cooler. This oil is then sent through orifice (7) and orifice (9) to the steering differential and brakes for lubrication. The remainder of the oil is sent through port (8) to the transmission and bevel gear for lubrication.The inlet relief valve limits the maximum oil pressure to 900 70 kPa (130 10 psi). When the pressure in chamber (1) exceeds 900 70 kPa (130 10 psi), the spool (2) shifts to the right against spring (3). This shift allows the oil to drain into the bevel gear case through passage (11) .When the pressure drops below 900 70 kPa (130 10 psi), spool (2) shifts back to the left. This shift blocks the flow of oil to the drain.
