Component Code(s) 1204SUBJECT: Some D6R II and D7R II May Experience Early Hour Poor Shifting and/or Excessive Contamination In The Power Train Oil Filter
PROBLEM:
The 187-8195 Drive Gear that is used to drive the implement and steering pump, may experience inadvertent thrust loads. These loads can cause the gear to wear into the flywheel housing. This wear causes fine metal particles that can contaminate the power train oil system. This may cause some D6R Series II and D7R Series II Track-Type Tractors to experience poor shifting and/or excessive contamination in the power train oil filter.
SOLUTION:
If a machine is experiencing poor shifting and/or excessive contamination in the power train oil filter, perform the following steps:
Remove the cover on the front of the flywheel housing. The cover is located in front of the implement and steering pump.
Position the drive gear towards the front of the flywheel housing.
Illustration 1
Install a 6V-6106 Dial Indicator Group, as shown. Zero out the dial indicator.
Push the drive gear towards the implement and steering pump. If the measurement taken is greater than 0.9 mm (0.04 inch), Caterpillar recommends a visual inspection of the flywheel housing and the pump drive gear should be performed.
Illustration 2
If the flywheel housing is found to be worn, as shown in Illustration 2, the items listed in the Table (1) for the D6R Series II and Table (2) for the D7R Series II should be replaced.
After the required repairs are made, the power train oil system should be flushed of all contaminates and the filter should be changed.
If early hour shifting problems were encountered, the shift solenoids may need to be changed. Refer to the Parts Manual for the machine that is being serviced for the correct part numbers and any additional part numbers that may need to be replaced.
