The cylinders are arranged in a 50 degree vee block configuration.The main bearing caps are fastened to the cylinder block with two studs and with four saddle bolts per cap. The studs are hydraulically tensioned. Two saddle bolts pass through each side of the cylinder block. The saddle bolts are used to prevent movement of the main bearing cap. The saddle bolts also add rigidity to the lower area of the cylinder block.The cylinder liners are designed to take advantage of the jacket water cooling system. The cylinder liners can be removed for replacement. The cylinder liner seats on the top face of the cylinder block. The cylinder liner is piloted below the liner flange at the top. The cylinder liner is sealed with an O-ring seal at the top and three O-ring seals at the bottom. The O-ring seals provide a seal between the cylinder liner and the cylinder block. The cylinder liner uses an upper removable sleeve to control the amount of carbon buildup around the piston crown.The engine has a separate cylinder head for each cylinder. Each cylinder head contains two inlet valves, two exhaust valves and four replaceable valve seats. The valves move in replaceable valve guides which are pressed into the cylinder head.The valves are actuated by camshaft followers (roller), pushrods, rocker arms and bridge assemblies. Each pair of inlet and exhaust valves are actuated by separate bridges which contact the rocker arm.The opening for the fuel injector is located between the four valves. A third lobe on the camshaft moves the camshaft follower, the pushrod and the rocker arm that operates the fuel injector. Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder.Combustion gas is sealed by a gasket that is located between the cylinder liner flange and the cylinder head. The gasket is a steel ring with a rectangular shape. Water and engine oil flow through O-ring seals between the cylinder head and the cylinder block.The seals are located in two plates for each cylinder.Each cylinder head is fastened to the cylinder block by four studs and four nuts. These studs are hydraulically tensioned. The nuts are tightened by hand and the hydraulic tension is released. The entire load on the stud is carried by the combustion seal ring gasket.
