Remove Front Timing Gear Cover (Earlier)
start by:a) remove fuel priming pumpb) remove vibration damper and hub1. Drain the oil filter housing.2. On marine engines only, drain the jacket water cooling system. Remove the expansion tank water outlet pipe and the tank overflow line. 3. Remove the oil filter housing left support bracket (1). 4. Remove the oil filter housing oil outlet lines (2) and the fuel priming pump linkage as a unit.5. Remove the fuel bleed line (3). Disconnect the oil pressure gauge line (4) from the top of the timing gear cover. 6. Remove the ten timing gear cover mounting bolts (5).7. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts that fasten to the timing gear cover. Loosen the remainder of the bolts in the oil pan. Lift the front of the engine and install spacers between the oil pan and cylinder block at the front of the block. Lower the engine.8. Remove all the timing gear cover mounting bolts and nuts.9. Use lifting bracket (A) to remove the front timing gear cover. Weight is approximately 95 lb. (43 kg).Install Front Timing Gear Cover (Earlier)
1. Install a new timing gear cover gasket. Cut the bottom of the gasket even with the bottom of the timing gear plate. If the oil pan gasket was damaged during the removal of the timing gear cover, it will be necessary to install a new oil pan gasket.2. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the lip of the crankshaft front seal. 3. Fasten tooling (A) and a hoist to the timing gear cover. Put the timing gear cover in position on the engine and install the bolts that hold it in place but do not tighten.4. Lift the front of the engine and remove the spacers between the oil pan and block. Lower the engine on to the oil pan base.5. Install the bolts that hold the oil pan to the timing gear cover. Tighten all the bolts that hold the timing gear cover in place.6. Connect the oil pressure gauge line to the top of the timing gear cover. Install the fuel bleed line.7. Install the oil filter housing oil outlet lines and fuel priming pump linkage.8. Install the oil filter housing left support bracket.9. On the marine engine only, install the expansion tank water outlet pipe and tank overflow line. Fill the jacket water cooling system.10. Install a new crankshaft front seal and wear sleeve.
