ACTION REQUIRED
During component rebuild, or at any planned or unplanned rebuild, check the spindle assembly for cracks using the magnetic particle and/or dye penetrate inspection process.
Action required is based on the crack length and the spindle part number.
Crack Length Criteria:
If cracks less than or equal to 16 mm in length are found, in any rear spindle for these trucks, the spindle can be reused. Review SEBF8083 for exceptions.
Part Numbers:
If cracks greater than 16 mm in length are found in the 139-7621 Spindle (part of 139-7622 Spindle As.), the spindle can not be repaired and must be sent to Reman.
If cracks greater than 16 mm in length are found in the 247-0869 Spindle (part of 247-0870 Spindle As.), the spindle can not be repaired and must be sent to Reman.
If cracks greater than 16 mm are found in the 278-8810 Spindle (part of 282-3817 Spindle As.), repair using SEBF8083 Inspection and Salvage of Rear Wheel Spindles for All Off-Highway Trucks. If the spindle can not be repaired as per SEBF8083 then send the spindle to Reman.
All spindles being returned to Reman must meet the Reman Core Acceptance Criteria.

Note: All claims must include the spindle part number in the additional comments. List one of the three spindles referred to in this letter: 139-7621, 247-0869, or 278-8810. The 10R0774 number is not to be listed.
Note: If there has been a previous repair, total accumulated part age/hours of the spindle will apply. Retain a copy of the previous repair invoice in the dealer's records for audit purposes, and specify repair date and machine hours in the "Additional Comments" section of the warranty claim.
Note: When cracks are found at PCR or during a rebuild and the cracks are not a cause for machine downtime, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code when reporting the claim.
Note: Reman spindle (10R0774) warranty issues are not to be covered under this letter. If Reman warranty does not apply then apply allowance on the actual spindle part number as per the instructions below.
Note: Claims against the 139-7621 Spindles (Part of the 139-7622 Spindle As.), are not allowed in this Service Letter. These spindles have met design requirements for life expectancy. Any issues with this spindle need to be reviewed with your District and/or Reman if Reman has previously remanufactured the spindle.
Note: The 247-0869 Spindles can not be claimed at 100% or 60% reimbursement by Caterpillar. These spindles are past 22,000 hours.
Note: The 278-8810 Spindle has no reimbursement restrictions.
Note: The Claims Allowance Table applies to cracked spindles that are not salvageable. Payload management plays a critical role in spindle component life. Careful consideration should be given to the customers payload management. If the customer demonstrates poor payload management, dealer
