Engine: 3618 (S/N: 2MW1-UP)Introduction
After new cylinder liners and piston rings are installed, initial operation of the engine is important for proper seating of the piston rings.During this break-in procedure, the engine operation is closely monitored. New data for the engine performance is recorded. To verify that the cylinders are in good condition, the peak cylinder pressures are measured. The procedure requires approximately five to seven hours. To ensure that engine performance is normal during the break-in procedure, nominal data of the engine operation must be compared to the new data. The nominal data can be obtained from the engine's Technical Marketing Information or from the following sources:
Use the data from the engine commissioning. The data is recorded for various loads. The data is recorded before any wear or deterioration takes place.
If there is no data from the engine commissioning, use data from the engine test cell. Understand that the data will not be specific to the site.
If data is not available from the engine commissioning or from the engine test cell, use data from the engine's history. Calculate an average of the existing data.Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.Break-In Procedure

Make at least 14 copies of Table 3 and 1 copy of Table 4.
Start the engine according to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7150, "Starting the Engine".
Verify that all of the systems are operating normally.
After the vessel has left the port, continue to monitor the engine for normal operation. Slowly increase the engine speed in increments of 50 rpm until the engine speed is 750 rpm.
Operate the engine for 20 to 30 minutes at each speed that is listed in Table 2. Before acceleration or deceleration, record the parameters that are listed in Table 3. Make sure that the engine is operating normally before acceleration and deceleration.

Record the parameters that are listed in Table 3. Use the 4C-6585 Cylinder Pressure Indicator and record the parameters that are listed in Table 4.
After Step 7 is completed, reduce the engine speed to 900 rpm for 20 to 30 minutes. Record the parameters that are listed in Table 3 again. If the engine operation is normal, proceed to Step 9.If the engine is not operating normally, determine the cause. Make the necessary corrections.Note: The normal cruising speed is specific for the vessel.
Return to the port at the cruising rpm (approximately 900 to 1000 rpm).Engine Performance
