Two different length lifting slings are used to remove boom (4) . To make the removal of boom (4) easier and to prevent possible parts damage, it is important that the correct length lifting slings be installed as indicated in Step 3. The boom will be properly balanced when the lifting slings are installed as indicated.
Fasten two 1U-8227 Lifting Slings (1) to the stick cylinder mounting pin. Fasten a hoist to the two lifting slings. Fasten two 1U-8226 Lifting Slings (2) to boom cylinder mounting pin (5) . Fasten the hoist to the two lifting slings.
Carefully position boom (4) in the upper frame without the shims. Use Tooling (A) to aid in aligning the pin bores.

Make sure that the threaded puller hole in pin assembly (6) is thoroughly clean. Install Tooling (D) in the threaded hole. Apply 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on pin assembly (6) . Use a hammer to temporarily install pin assembly (6) in the upper frame pin bore. Install washers and bolt (7) into pin assembly (6) . Do not remove the hoist from the boom at this time.
Move boom (4) to one side until contact is made with the upper frame. Measure the clearance between the boom and the upper frame. Measure the clearance at the pin joint. The clearance must not be more than 1.6 mm (0.06 inch). The addition of shims will not be required if the clearance is less than 1.6 mm (0.06 inch). The addition of shims will be required if the clearance is more than 1.6 mm (0.06 inch).

Add the correct thickness of shims for the required lateral clearance. Remove retaining bolt (7) and the washers. Fasten Tooling (C) to pin assembly (6) . Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to Tooling (C) for support. Use Tooling (C) to remove pin assembly (6) halfway out of the bore. Remove Tooling (C) from pin assembly (6) .
Install the correct thickness of shims that is determined in step 6. Install the shims between the boom and the upper frame. Install the shims on the side opposite of retaining bolt (7) .
Use Tooling (D) to reinstall pin assembly (6) . Remove Tooling (D) from the pin assembly. Install the washers and bolt (7) into pin assembly (6) .
Remove Tooling (E) from the cab. Lower the cab.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".
