Block Diagram Of The Brake/Cooling ECMThe block diagram shows the systems or functions that are controlled by the brake/cooling ECM. The following systems are controlled by the brake/cooling ECM:
Automatic Retarder Control (ARC): The automatic retarder control system is designed to modulate the brakes during a descent of a long grade in order to maintain engine speed (retarding).
Traction Control System (TCS): The traction control system is designed to engage the secondary brakes in order to decrease the revolutions of a spinning wheel. The tire that has the better traction receives an increased amount of torque. The TCS is controlled by the brake/cooling ECM.
Engine Cooling Fan: The brake/cooling ECM controls the engine cooling fan. The ECM uses temperature, brake status and ground speed in order to vary the speed of the fan.
Brake Cooling Pump: The brake/cooling ECM analyzes the temperature of the brakes, the status of the brakes, and ground speed. The ECM adjusts the speed of the brake cooling pump accordingly.
Rear Axle Lubrication: The brake/cooling ECM controls the amount of brake oil that flows to the differential and final drives. The ECM controls two solenoids that direct the flow of oil toward the final drives and differential and away from the final drives and differential. The brake/cooling ECM also provides the service technician with enhanced diagnostic capabilities. This is available through the use of onboard memory. Onboard memory stores the possible diagnostic codes for retrieval at the time of service. Service personnel should use the Cat ET for troubleshooting.
