Install the lower half of main bearing (3) on main bearing cap (1) .
Illustration 2 g01096660
Install the upper half of the main bearing by installing Tooling (A) in oil hole (4) in the crankshaft. Use Tooling (B) in order to turn the crankshaft in the direction which will install the upper half of the main bearing. The tab of the main bearing must be installed last.

Install thrust plates (2) for the center main bearing.Note: Install thrust plates (2) with the identification "Block Side" toward the cylinder block.Note: Thrust plates (2) will only be located on the center main bearing.Note: Do not rotate the crankshaft when Tooling (D) is installed.
Use Tooling (D) in order to check the bearing clearance.
Illustration 4 g00503084
Install main bearing caps (1). Apply Tooling (E) to the bolts. Install the bolts in main bearing caps (1). The tabs must be on the same side when the two halves of the main bearing are installed. The Arrow must point toward the front of the engine.
Tighten the bolt on the tab end of main bearing cap (1) to a torque of 258 14 N m (190 10 lb ft). Next, tighten the other bolt on main bearing cap (1) to a torque of 258 14 N m (190 10 lb ft). Put a mark on each bolt and main bearing cap (1). Tighten the bolt on the opposite side of the tab end of main bearing cap (1) for an additional 120 5 degrees. Next, tighten the bolt on the tab end of main bearing cap (1) for an additional 120 5 degrees.
Check the end play of the crankshaft with Tooling (C). Ensure that Tooling (C) is against a machined surface. The end play is controlled by the thrust plates of the center main bearing. The end play with new thrust plates (3) must be 0.13 to 0.50 mm (0.005 to 0.020 inch). The maximum permissible end play with used thrust plates is 0.89 mm (0.035 inch).End By: Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
