The 3054 and 3056 Engines that are in the machines that are listed above use rotary fuel injection pumps. These rotary fuel injection pumps are completely dependent on the fuel as an internal lubricant. Some fuel supplies may not meet the minimum standard for fuel lubricity. In such cases, the life of the fuel system may be decreased. The following problems could occur if an improper fuel is used:
Stalling
Low Power
Unstable speed
Hard startingSome low sulfur fuels may have a low lubricity. Caterpillar recommends the use of fuels that meet certain minimum specifications. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250-12, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".When possible, use existing formulations of off-highway fuel. This fuel will not require any additives to provide good engine performance and good reliability of the fuel system. Your fuel supplier may not sell both off-highway fuel and on-highway fuel. If your local fuel supplier does not sell off-highway fuel, it may be necessary to use a fuel additive. Caterpillar is developing a conditioner for fuel that will be available soon. If the lubricity of a fuel does not meet the minimum requirements, consult your fuel supplier. Do not treat the fuel without consulting your fuel supplier. Some additives are not compatible. These additives can cause problems in the fuel system.All water should be drained from the fuel tank before a fuel additive is used. Also, all sediment should be drained from the fuel tank and new fuel filters should be installed. Be sure to carry out all normal fuel system maintenance. It is extremely important to drain the water separator daily. Also, the fuel filters should be changed on a regular basis.
