Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the data link connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Check for active diagnostic codes that are related to the engine coolant diverter solenoid.
Start the "Coolant Diverter Valve Test" in the "Special Tests" under the "Diagnostics" menu on Cat ET.
Once Cat ET displays the status of the engine coolant diverter solenoid, stop the "Coolant Diverter Valve Test".Expected Result:The test indicated "Not Active: Device Open" or "Not Active: Device Short".Results:
Open - The test indicated "Not Active: Device Open". The ECM is detecting an open in the circuit for the engine coolant diverter solenoid. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Short - The test indicated "Not Active: Device Short". The ECM is detecting a short in the circuit for the engine coolant diverter solenoid. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Create a Short Circuit at the Harness Connector for the Solenoid
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to create a test circuit across the harness connector for the engine coolant diverter solenoid. Crimp connector pins to both ends of the jumper wire.
Disconnect the harness connector for the engine coolant diverter solenoid. Install the jumper wire across the terminals that are on the harness side of the connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Access the "Special Tests" under the "Diagnostics" menu.
Start the "Coolant Diverter Valve Test" on Cat ET.
Once Cat ET displays the status of the engine coolant diverter solenoid, stop the "Coolant Diverter Valve Test".Expected Result:The test indicated "Not Active: Device Short" with the jumper wire in place. Results:
OK - The test indicated "Not Active: Device Short". The solenoid appears to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The test indicated "Not Active: Device Open".Repair: There appears to be an open circuit in the engine harness. There may be a problem with the ECM. Reconnect the solenoid to the solenoid connector. Proceed to Test Step 6.Test Step 4. Create an Open Circuit at the Harness Connector for the Solenoid
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Not OK - The test indicates "Not Active: Device Short". There appears to be a short circuit in the engine harness. There may be a problem with the ECM. Reconnect the solenoid to the solenoid connector. Proceed to Test Step 6.Test Step 5. Check the Resistance of the Solenoid
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 of the engine coolant diverter solenoid.Expected Result:The resistance is less than 13 Ohms for
