Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the fan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan - Remove and Install" for additional information.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

Remove eight bolts (1) that fasten water pump (3) to the front housing.
Remove two nuts (2) (not shown) from the back side of the water pump.
Remove water pump (3) and the gasket from the engine. Inspect the gasket for damage. If the gasket is damaged, use a new part for replacement.Note: It may be necessary to tap water pump (3) with a soft faced hammer in order to remove water pump (3) from the engine. Tapping the water pump with a soft faced hammer will help release a stuck water pump from the front housing.
