CAN data-link circuitCID 0246 - FMI 09 indicates the VIMSTM 3G Main ECM has detected an abnormal update rate on the proprietary CAN data-link.Following are the causes of an abnormal update rate:
Failed propitiatory CAN data-link
Failed propitiatory CAN data-link device
Incorrectly connected connectorNote: Use a calibrated digital multimeter for the following tests.Test Step 1. CHECK THE CAN DATA-LINK RELATED ECM FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Check the CAN data-link related ECM fuses and circuit breakers.Expected Result:A fuse has failed or a circuit breaker has tripped.Results:
OK - A fuse has failed or a circuit breaker has tripped.Repair: Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker.If the new fuse fails or the reset circuit breaker trips, investigate and correct the cause.Ensure that the diagnostic code is no longer active.STOP
NOT OK - A fuse has not failed and a circuit breaker has not tripped. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. INSPECT THE CAN DATA-LINK PORTION OF THE HARNESS
Turn off the keyswitch.
Turn off the battery disconnect switch.
Inspect the harness for the following:
Inspect the connectors, pins, and sockets for the following:
Cleanliness
Security
Proper mating
Seal condition
Moisture
Corrosion
Connector allen head screw for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in)
Inspect the wires at the connector for the following:
Security
Nicks
AbrasionNote: Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.
Inspect the harness for the following:
Damage
Abrasion
KinksExpected Result:The harness is in good condition.Results:
OK - The harness is in good condition. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The harness is not in good condition.Repair: Repair or replace the harness. STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS RESISTANCE
Turn off the keyswitch.
Disconnect the VIMS 3G Main ECM from the harness.
Disconnect Cat ET from the service tool connector.
Measure the resistance at the VIMS 3G Main ECM connector between 34 and 50.Expected Result:The resistance is low.Results:
OK - The resistance is low. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is high or open.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR A SHORT
Measure the resistance at the VIMS 3G Main ECM connector between:
Pin 34 and frame ground
Pin 50 and frame groundExpected Result:The resistance should be high or openResults:
OK - The resistance is high or open Proceed to Test Step 5.
NOT OK - The harness is shorted.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 5. RECHECK FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Connect the Cat® ET service tool to the service tool connector.
Turn on the battery disconnect switch.
Turn on the keyswitch.
Check Cat ET for an active CID 0246 - FMI 09 diagnostic code.Expected Result:CID 0246 - FMI 09 is not active.Results:
OK - CID 0246 - FMI 09 is not active.Repair: Reset the system and troubleshoot any other active diagnostic codes.STOP
NOT OK - CID 0246 - FMI 09 is active.Repair: A CAN-related ECM may have failed, however, ECM failure is unlikely. Contact your Cat dealer technical communicator.STOP
