Introduction
A well-planned design will aid reliability, performance,and serviceability. To be successful, the designermust be aware of the application and installationrequirements for Caterpillar Marine Products.As a first step in this part of the operation, makethe designer aware of Caterpillar reference publications,such as the Marine EngineApplication & InstallationGuides, LEKM7142-7147, InstallationGuides for Electronically Controlled MarineEngines, RENR2315, which includes thefollowing Electronic InstallationGuides:

The engine and transmission installation should be designedto give efficient and reliable operation. A poorlydesigned installation can hinder serviceability andmake routine maintenance and in-hull repairs difficult.The neglect of specific design requirements formounting and alignment, and support systems, canlead to poor performance and increased cost of operation.
In the event of OEM multiple (batch) production of vessels,it is extremely important to make the designer/builderaware of Caterpillar application and installationrequirements. Any discrepancies must be discussedand corrected at this time to assure the integrityand compliance of the OEM design.
When the designer has completed a review of the Caterpillarapplication and installation requirements, discussany concern he might have about specific areasof the design. This will establish a good workingrelationship in the design phase of the vessel.After the installation drawings for the vessel havebeen laid out, follow up with the designer to makesure the drawings meet the application and installationguide requirements. As an aid in the reviewof the design, use the Design andConstruction Review Form, SEHS8716.
Explanation of Design andConstruction Review Form
The Design andConstruction Review Form, SEHS8716,is available from Caterpillar and providesa checklist for dealer use only. The form canbe ordered using the normal literature order procedure.
This form is a simple checklist. It is used to determineif sufficient information has been provided tothe designer so the layout will comply with Caterpillarreference requirements.
There is provision to record the Caterpillar reference materialsprovided to the designer, and a complete checklistfor the results of the design and serviceabilityreview. Compliance with Caterpillar reference requirements is noted by placing acheck in the box next to the systemreviewed. If the design affecting aspecific system does not comply, there is spaceto record the action required to follow up and correctthe problem area(s).
After the Design and Construction Review Form is completed,and any corrective action needed is agreed to,it is recommended that all parties concerned sign at thedesignated location on the form.
During the construction of the vessel, the design requirementswill be checked to ensure the vessel will meetCaterpillar specifications for the installation. Any discrepanciesof the design noted during the constructionphase should be documented and discussedwith the builder.
