Introduction
The problem that is identified in the technical information bulletin that follows does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
Clean out filters and initial filters are plugging with copper which creates VIMS filter plugging events. Differentials and or final drives are being removed to find the source which then creates unnecessary downtime. Components are not failing but undergoing a break-in of wearable parts. The 363-0639 Bearing has been found to be the source of high copper during initial break-in.Solution
Do not operate the truck with a plugged filter restriction warning. Remove and replace filter. Investigate removed filter for root cause of filter plugging event. If only copper is found in the filter, the magnetic plugs are free of contaminates, and the oil levels are correct, continue to operate truck. Do not remove components for high copper since wear is expected. The initial wear is high on some trucks while other trucks will not have the signs of copper. Tolerance stack ups and the potential of the axle moving inward can cause wear. The high copper will disappear after initial wear and a few filter changes. The truck can continue to operate without loss of production due to the unnecessary component removals.Continue to monitor magnetic plugs and SOS oil samples for ferrous metals. If ferrous metals (iron or steel) are found, further intervention is needed.
