3616 ( 1PD ) EnginesIncomplete cleaning and sealing of the cylinder head studs can result in stress corrosion cracking and breakage of the studs. Use this procedure to install cylinder head studs. Make a note of this procedure in the appropriate Service Manual modules.
1. Use a wire brush and 8T9011 Solvent to clean the threads on the studs and in the threaded holes for the studs, in the top of the cylinder block. Use a soft towel or vacuum to remove the cleaning solvent from the studs and threaded holes in the cylinder block. Do not use compressed air to remove the solvent from the threaded holes in the cylinder block. The compressed air may contain moisture, and/or the compressed air may blow debris from the holes into the cylinder liners.2. Be sure the surface of the studs is clean and dry. Then put a 1.5 mm (.06") thick coating of 8T0065 RTV Silicone Sealant on the unthreaded portion of each stud, 150 mm (5.9") above the lower thread.3. Put a light coating of 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the studs that are to be installed in the block. Install the studs in the block and tighten to a torque of 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft).4. Apply a bead of 8T0065 RTV Silicone Sealant around the stud at the top of the cylinder block to be sure the counterbore around the stud is completely filled with sealant. Smooth this sealant to form a fillet between the stud and the block.
