Information:

To prevent personal injury, do not use the starter motor to turn the flywheel.Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow additional time for the engine to cool before measuring valve clearance.
Note: The following warning should be on the valve covers of the engine.
Electrical shock hazard. The electronic unit injector system uses 90-120 volts.
Only qualified service personnel should perform this maintenance. Refer to the Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting Manual, "Valve Lash and Valve Bridge Adjustment" article or consult your Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve lash adjustment procedure.Operation of Caterpillar engines with improper valve adjustments can reduce engine efficiency. This reduced efficiency could result in excessive fuel usage and/or shortened engine component life.
Valve Bridge
Check the valve bridge before you set the valve lash. Be sure that the valve bridge is equally seated on both the valve stems. If necessary, adjust the valve bridge before you set the valve lash.
Operation of Caterpillar Engines with improper engine valve lash adjustments will reduce the engine efficiency. This reduced efficiency could result in excessive fuel usage and/or shortened engine component life.Measure the engine valve lash with the engine stopped. To obtain an accurate measurement, allow at least 20 minutes for the valves to cool to engine cylinder head and block temperature.
Illustration 1 g00296510If the valve clearance is within 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) of the given nominal clearance, no adjustment is required. If the clearance is not within the given limits, set the clearance to the amount that is specified in the chart.
Table 1
VALVE CLEARANCE SETTING
Inlet 0.50 mm (0.020 inch)
Exhaust 1.00 mm (0.040 inch)
Illustration 2 g00574317To check the engine valve lash and the bridge, refer to Testing And Adjusting, RENR2274, "3524B Engine For Caterpillar Built Machines" or refer to Special Instruction, REHS0128, "Using the 147-5482 Indicator Gauge Group For Valve Lash and Valve Bridge Adjustment". Consult your Cat dealer for any additional information.
