See the article that follows.For many years Caterpillar has maintained an active program used to obtain information about incidents that involve Caterpillar products. An incident is any event that involves any Caterpillar product that results in one of the following:
Personal injury
Death
Product damage
Property damage
An especially unique event or a near miss event (even though no injury or damage occurred)The purpose for reporting these events is to gather and record objective and accurate information. This information will allow Caterpillar to evaluate the need for product changes.New Process
The majority of Caterpillar's Incident Reports come from Caterpillar Dealers. Caterpillar was pleased to announce in November 2003, a new easier way for dealers to submit information about incidents. All dealer reported incidents should now be submitted through the Caterpillar CPI Dealer Solution Network (https://cpi.cat.com). This is the same URL now utilized by dealers to report all product issues to Caterpillar. This URL will ensure quick review by the appropriate personnel and the development of a plan of action, when required.Old Incident Reporting URL
The old incident reporting URL, https://incident.cat.com, will remain in place and continue to provide information about reporting incidents. Selection of the "Submit an Incident" link however, will redirect the user automatically to the new CPI Dealer Solution Network Service Request form. Although the new form has a different appearance, the form still requires the same basic incident information as the previous form. The new process simplifies the task of sending Caterpillar incident reports and gives the dealers the ability to view the submitted report.A Final Word
Caterpillar wants to be informed about every incident that involves a Caterpillar product. Reports of incidents are used to gather and record factual information concerning an incident. The information will be used to provide important feedback to product design groups. Timely relevant facts about the incident and the location of the incident will enable Caterpillar to conduct further investigation and follow up, as needed. Because incident reports may be disclosed in the course of future lawsuits, accurate and factual information is essential.
