Information:
Check the Operating Speeds of the Elevator
Place a mark on one flight of the chain. Operate the engine at high idle rpm. Use a stopwatch to make a record of the number of revolutions per minute.
Table 1
Operating Speed of the Elevator
Speed Range     RPM of the Chain     Seconds per Revolution of the Chain
Fast Forward     9.4 to 11.1     5.4 to 6.4
Slow Forward     6.7 to 7.5     8 to 9
Reverse     6.7 to 7.5     8 to 9    Check the Load Cylinders for the Axle Suspension
Watch the load cylinders when the load cylinders are extended and retracted. The movement must be smooth. If movement is not smooth, refer to "Performance Checks".Performance Checks
The hydraulic oil must be at normal operating temperature when you perform these checks.Problem
The operating speeds are not correct.Probable Cause
The pump is malfunctioning. Check the pump efficiency.
The setting for the relief valve of the elevator circuit is incorrect.
The control valve for the elevator is not working properly.
Check the operation of the elevator pilot valve.
Check the operation of the elevator diverter valve.
The hydraulic motor is malfunctioning.
The elevator chain is out of adjustment.Problem
The pump makes noise. The load cylinder rods do not move smoothly. There are air bubbles in the oil.Probable Cause
The viscosity of the oil is incorrect.
The pressure compensator valve activates at low oil pressure.
The oil line on the inlet side of the axle suspension pump is loose.
The axle suspension pump has too much wear.
The axle suspension pump is receiving insufficient oil.Problem
The load cylinder rods will not fully extend.Probable Cause
The pressure setting of the pump control valve for the axle suspension pump is set too low.
The axle suspension pump has too much wear.
An O-ring seal in the axle suspension system has failed.
The linkage for the leveling stem needs an adjustment.Problem
When the engine is stopped the leveling valve will not automatically move in order to turn off the suspension ride.Probable Cause
The leveling stem or the directional stem in the leveling valve will not move.
There is dirt in the valve orifice of the leveling valve.
The linkage for the leveling valve has been improperly adjusted.Problem
The output of the axle suspension pump is low.Probable Cause
The oil level in the hydraulic tank is low.
The viscosity of the oil is incorrect.
The axle suspension pump has too much wear.Problem
The pressure of the oil is low.Probable Cause
The pump control valve for the axle suspension pump activates at an oil pressure that is lower than the recommended pressure setting.
The axle suspension pump has too much wear.
An O-ring seal in the axle suspension system has failed.
A valve spool has failed.Problem
The temperature of the oil is too hot.Probable Cause
The viscosity of the oil is incorrect.
The pump control valve for the axle suspension pump activates at low oil pressure that is lower than the recommended pressure setting.
The axle suspension pump has too much wear.
There is a restriction in an oil passage.
The load on the axle suspension system is too high.
