(4) ShimsNote: Before you make any adjustments to the wheel bearings, make sure that the bearing cups are seated against the bottom of the bore in the wheel. In order to check for clearance behind the bearing cup, use a feeler gauge with a 0.03 mm (.001 inch) or 0.05 mm (.002 inch) thickness. If any clearance is found, use the bearing driver or press in order to move the bearing cup. Drive or press the bearing cup until the bearing cup is seated against the bore in the wheel.
Position the wheel and the bearings onto the axle housing.
Install the hub and the ring gear.
Install retainer (1) without any shims (4) .

Bolt Tightening Sequence for Shim Adjustment
While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts in a circular pattern to 35 N m (26 lb ft). Tighten each bolt once.
While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts in a circular pattern to 70 N m (52 lb ft). Tighten each bolt once.
Use a depth micrometer (2) in order to measure the depth through the holes with threads in the retainer (1). Find the average depth.
Use an outside micrometer (3) to measure the thickness of the retainer (1) at the holes with threads. Find the average thickness.
Find the difference between the two average measurements. This difference is the gap between the end of the axle housing and the retainer (1) .
Remove the retainer (1). Add 0.25 mm (.010 inch) to the average distance that was found in Step 8. This is the shim pack thickness. Select shims (4) in order to create a shim pack.

Final Bolt Tightening Sequence
Install retainer (1) with shims (4). While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts in the proper sequence, as shown. Tighten bolts to a torque of 280 30 N m (207 22 lb ft).
