Ensure that all adjustments and repairs that are carried out to the fuel system are performed by authorized personnel that have the correct training. Before beginning ANY work on the fuel system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, General Hazard Information and High Pressure Fuel Lines for safety information. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Cleanliness of Fuel System Components for detailed information on the standards of cleanliness that must be observed during ALL work on the fuel system.
Issues with the fuel supply to the fuel priming pump can result in fuel being drawn along the return to tank line.The following symptoms have been found in service:
Fuel shutoff valves on the fuel tank outlet or the fuel outlet tube assembly, turned off or damaged
Fuel shutoff valves on fuel tank outlet or fuel outlet tube assembly, in the OFF or partially OFF position
Foreign objects causing obstruction to the fuel tank outlet, fuel outlet tube assembly
In-line fuel filter restricted prior to the fuel priming pumpDamage to the fuel priming pump printed circuit board components may be caused by over-voltage or overload spikes.The following symptoms have been found in service:
Fuel priming pump not rotating
Fuel priming pump noisy in operation
Low fuel pressure to the primary filter
High fuel temperature events E363
High Aftertreatment fuel pump (ARD) pressure and events on C7.1 engines 1050-2
Engine derate
Blown fuses
Tripped fuse breakers
Check that the electrical system for the fuel priming pump. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Pump Relay Circuit - Test" for the correct procedure.
Check the following items from the fuel tank to the fuel priming pump.
Check for low fuel tank level.
Check the fuel tank isolation valve (if installed) is in the OPEN position.
If the temperature is below 0° C (32° F), check for solidified fuel (wax).
Check for fuel supply lines are not restricted.
Check that the low-pressure fuel lines are correctly installed.
Check the fuel flow capabilities from the fuel priming pump.
Inspect and replace if necessary, the in-line fuel filter that is installed upstream of the Electric Fuel Lift Pump (EFLP).
