Walk-Around Inspection
For your own safety, and maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before mounting the machine or starting the engine.Look around and under the machine for items such as loose or missing bolts, trash build-up, oil, coolant or fuel leaks.Inspect the condition and inflation of tires. Inspect for cuts, gouges and other damage. If a tire is damaged have it inspected and repaired by your tire dealer. If the tire appears to be under or over inflated, check the inflation pressure.
Operating the machine with incorrectly inflated tires can cause heat build-up in the tire which leads to accelerated wear.
Caterpillar recommend using dry nitrogen (N2) gas for both tire inflation and tire pressure adjustments on all rubber tired machines. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not support combustion inside the tire.
Use a self-attaching inflation chuck and stand behind the tire tread while inflating the tire.
Consult your tire dealer for recommended pressures for your job conditions.Remove any trash or debris. Ensure that all windows, mirrors and light lenses are clean.Have any necessary repairs made and have loose connections and bolts tightened to their specified torque. Have any missing parts replaced before starting the engine or operating the machine. Ensure all guards and access doors are in place and properly closed. 1. Check the transmission oil level. Add oil if necessary. See the section "Transmission - Measure Oil Level." 2. Check the axles for leaks. 3. Inspect the condition of all steps and hand holds. Repair any damaged steps and hand holds and ensure they are clean.4. Inspect the cab for damage.5. Inspect the operator's compartment for cleanliness and broken gauges or indicator lights. 6. Inspect the cooling system for leaks and trash build-up.7. Check the engine compartment for oil and fuel leaks. Check the engine oil level. See the section "Engine Crankcase - Measure Oil Level."8. Service the air cleaner if necessary and remove debris from the precleaner screen. See the section "Engine Air Intake - Service When Indicated." 9. Check the fuel level.10. Check the hydraulic oil level. 11. Drain moisture from air tank to establish the normal amount. If an abnormally large amount is present the air dryer may need servicing.
