3406B, 3408, 3408B Truck EnginesReference: All Operation and/or Maintenance Guides for 3406, 3406B, 3408 Truck Engines.The recommended interval for intake and exhaust valve lash adjustment has now been changed for all the above truck engines. (An earlier article in the September 26, 1984 Truck Engine News and the current Guides show the new interval only for 3406B Truck Engines.) The new recommended interval is: "Adjust the intake and exhaust valve lash at the first oil change or 12,500 mi (20,000 km), whichever occurs first. After that, adjust the valve lash every 100,000 mi (161,000 km), or once a year ".
This new recommendation will help extend the service life of the valve train parts. The new recommendation applies to the four listed models of new, rebuilt, or exchange truck engines. Formerly, there was no adjustment recommended until 50,000 mi (80,000 km). Be sure to note this change in all the affected Guides.
