Start By:a. Remove the final drive, the brake and the wheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive, Brake and Wheel - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Remove ten bolts (1) and the washers from retainer plate (2). 2. Remove retainer plate (2). 3. Remove shim pack (3). 4. Install Tooling (A) to wheel assembly (4), as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (A).5. Use the hoist to carefully remove wheel assembly (4) from spindle assembly (5). The weight of the wheel assembly is 127 Kg (280 lb). 6. Remove bearing cone (6) and Duo-Cone seal (7) from spindle (5). Bearing cone (6) is a slip fit to the spindle.7. Use the following procedure to install Tooling (B) in the hole of hub (8): a. Place the lifting sling in the hole of hub (8). b. Install the bolt between the sling and the hole. c. Fasten the sling to the bolt by tying the sling around the bolt, as shown. This will prevent the bolt from moving during the removal of hub (8). 8. Repeat Steps 7.a through 7.c in order to install Tooling (B) in the two remaining holes.9. Attach a hoist to the lifting slings. Use the hoist to carefully remove hub (8) and ring gear (9) from wheel assembly (4). The weight of the hub and the ring gear as a unit is 68 Kg (150 lb). 10. Remove Duo-Cone seal (10) from wheel assembly (4). 11. Remove bearing cups (11) and (12) from wheel assembly (4). 12. Remove three bolts (13) and the washers from hub (8). 13. Remove retaining ring (14) from ring gear (9). 14. Use a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to carefully remove hub (8) from ring gear (9). The weight of the hub is 32 Kg (70 lb). 15. Remove bearing cup (15) from hub (8). 16. Remove bushing (16) from hub (8).
