(9) Wheel spindle The drive chain connects sprocket (6) to the final drive. The sprocket turns wheel spindle (9), rotating plates (5) and the brake hub that is located in wheel spindle housing (3). The drive wheels are connected to wheel spindle (9).There are disc brakes in each wheel spindle housing (3). These brakes are for stopping the machine and for the parking brake. Wheel spindle (9) is connected to housing (3) by two tapered roller bearings (4). Wheel spindle housing (3) does not turn. Duo-cone seal kit (8) is located between wheel spindle (9) and wheel spindle housing (3). Duo-cone seal kit (8) seals the oil in the tandem housing. Duo-cone seal kit (8) keeps contaminants out of the tandem housing.Plates (5) and discs (7) of the brakes are cooled by oil in the tandem housing.

(12) Parking and secondary brake springs When the service brake is applied, the brake control valve sends oil through brake lines (2). The oil flows from brake lines (2) to oil chamber (11).The oil in chamber (11) pushes service brake piston (10). Service brake piston (10) pushes plates (5) and discs (7) together. Plates (5) rotate and discs (7) are stationary. When the plates and the discs are compressed together, the shear of the oil will slow stopping the rotation of the wheel assembly.

(16) Retraction spring for the service brake piston When the service brake is released, oil flows out of oil chamber (11) and to brake line (2). The oil will flow from brake lines (2) to the tank. Retraction spring (16) and guide (15) will pull service brake piston (10). Service brake piston (10) will move away from plates (5) and discs (7). The plates and the discs will not be in contact and the wheels will be free to rotate.When the parking brake is released, the parking brake control valve sends oil through line (1). The oil flows from line (1) to oil chamber (13).The oil in chamber (13) pushes parking brake piston (14) away from plates (5) and discs (7).When the parking brake is applied, oil flows out of chamber (13) and to line (1). The oil will flow from line (1) to the tank. Spring assembly (12) will push parking brake piston (14). Parking brake piston (14) is pushed against plates (5) and discs (7) together.
