Above 0°C (32°F)
1. Push the transmission speed control lever into NEUTRAL. 2. Push the transmission parking brake lever DOWN. 3. Move the implement control levers to the HOLD position. 4. Pull the governor control lever back through the shut-off detent. Then return it to the low idle position. 5. Turn the start switch key to the ON position. 6. The coolant flow (1), engine oil pressure (2), and the alternator light (3) should come ON. 7. Rotate the start switch key to START. Release the switch key when the engine starts.Below 0°C (32°F)
1. Follow steps 1 through 6 for "Above 0°C (32°F)." 2. Rotate the Start Switch key to START.
Inject starting aid (ether), ONLY while cranking the engine. Use sparingly, excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage.Use ether for cold starting purposes only.
3. Push the Starting Aid (ether) knob and release.4. Use additional Starting Fluid every 2 seconds until engine starts.5. Release the Start Switch key when the engine starts.6. Use Starting Aid every 2 seconds, after the engine starts, until it is running smoothly.
After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow 2 minutes for the starting motor to cool before cranking again.
For starting BELOW -18°C (0°F), use of additional Cold Weather Starting Aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater or extra battery capacity may be required.At temperatures BELOW -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Cold Weather Operation, Lubrication & Maintenance Guide," Form No. SEBU5338, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting With a Boost
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode. Do not smoke when observing battery electrolyte level.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.
When boost starting tractor, follow the instructions below to properly start the tractor. Attach the Booster Cable to the External Starting Source first.This tractor has a 24 Volt starting system. Use only equal voltage for boost starting. Use of welder or higher voltage will damage electrical system.
With Boost Start Receptacle Cable Plug Assembly:
If the tractor to be started has a cable plug assembly available, use a Booster Cable with a connector that will mate with the Receptacle.The 8S2632 Plug Assembly is 10 feet long and has Connectors for a Receptacle on the tractor to be started on one end, and Spade Terminals for a battery cart on the other.The 9S3664 Plug Assembly is 15 feet long and has Tractor Receptacle Connectors on both ends. This assembly permits starting a tractor with a boost from another tractor, when both have starting receptacles.1. Place the transmission control lever in NEUTRAL. Engage the Parking Brake Lock. Lower all equipment to the ground. Turn the start switch key to off.2. Connect the cable to the starting boost source. 3. Lift up the access cover. Remove the Receptacle Cover on the tractor to be started. Insert the Plug into the Starting Receptacle.4. Start the engine. See "Starting the Engine."5. After the engine starts, Remove the Cable and Install the
