Install outer bearing cup (10) on both sides of the differential.

Install adjusting nut (7) and bearing caps (9) hand tight.
Install bolts (8) on both sides of the differential. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 295 N m (218 lb ft).

Install locking tabs (5) and bolts on both sides of the differential.

Use a suitable micrometer to measure Distance (X) or Distance (Y) between the opposite surfaces of the bearing caps.

Tighten each of the bearing caps. Measure each adjustment until Distance (X) or Distance (Y) is 340.0 .30 mm (13.39 0.012 inch).

Attach a dial indicator on the mounting flange of the carrier.
Adjust the dial indicator so the plunger is against the back surface of the ring gear.
Adjust the dial indicator to zero.
Rotate the differential and ring gear. The run out of the ring gear cannot exceed 0.08 mm (0.003 inch). Note: If the run out of the ring gear exceeds 0.08 mm (0.003 inch), remove the carrier. Inspect the parts and replace the parts, if necessary.

Attach a dial indicator to the mounting flange of the carrier.
Adjust the dial indicator so that the plunger or the pointer is against the tooth surface.
Adjust the dial of the indicator to zero.
Hold the drive pinion in position.
Rotate the ring gear in both directions against the teeth of the pinion. The backlash should read 0.30 1.0 mm (0.012 0.04 inch). Adjust the backlash, as needed. Note: The backlash is increased by moving the ring gear away from the pinion and decreased by moving the ring gear closer to the pinion.

Apply a marking compound to 12 teeth of the ring gear. Rotate the ring gear so the teeth are next to the pinion.
Rotate the ring gear forward and backward so that the 12 teeth rotate past the pinion at least six times.
Look at the contact patterns on the ring gear teeth.

The drive pinion is too deep into the carrier.

After all of the adjustments are made, install the locking wire in the bearing cap bolts. Install the locking bolts.

Apply Tooling (J) to the face of differential assembly (2).
Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) to the yoke and install differential assembly (2) into axle housing (3). The weight of differential assembly (2) is approximately 58 kg (128 lb).
Install bolts (1).
Install the axle shafts into the differential. End By:
