Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Tools And Shop Product Guide, NENG2500, for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and keep contaminants from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
At operating temperature, the oil can be extremely hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Be cautious of hot oil when any plugs are removed or hose assemblies disconnected from the axle housings.
The axle housing and final drives retain a constant pressure inside the axle housing. Disconnect the axle breather hose from the breather to vent the axle housing and release any pressure before any filler or drain plug is removed.
1. Disconnect the breather hose from the axle breather to release any pressure.2. Remove the drain plug and drain the oil from the axle and final drives into a suitable container for storage or disposal. For machines with an axle cooling system installed the axle and final drive capacity is 159 liters (42 US gal.) or 119 liters (31.4 US gal.) for a standard machine.3. Remove oil pressure from the braking system. Refer to Remove Oil Pressure from Braking System, R2900 L.H.D. Braking System, Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Form No. RENR4588 (9EL5058) for the correct procedure. 4. Disconnect service and parking brake hose assemblies (1) and (2) from manifold (3), or slack adjuster (if equipped). 5. Disconnect axle breather hose assembly (4) from the axle housing. 6. For machines with axle oil cooling installed, remove guard assembly (5) from the front axle housing. Disconnect hose assembly (6) and hose assembly (7). 7. Fasten tooling (B) and a suitable hoist to each side of the front axle assembly as shown. 8. Remove six bolts (8) and
