--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Use the following procedure to install the equalizer bar. The new equalizer bars use limited slip seals for increased service life on the end pin joints. See the following chart for part numbers.
Installation Procedure
1. Inspect the seal and the spherical bearing edge in order to insure there is no damage to the surface before assembling the equalizer bar to the track roller frame.2. Rotate the bearing retaining ring in order to position the ring opening so that the seal cavity is open to the vent passage in the equalizer bar. This alignment will prevent the air and oil in the joint from forcing the seal out of its neutral position (flush with the front edge of the equalizer bar) when the joint is lubricated with a high pressure gun.3. Lubricate the seals with K-Y or petroleum jelly for easy pin installation and seal protection.4. When the joint is aligned for assembly, use a guide pin that is fabricated from a used end pin. The guide pin should slip in and out of the joint without resistance. At this time, the joint should be aligned well enough to drive the end pin into position.5. Lubricate the end pin with K-Y petroleum jelly for easy insertion and seal protection.6. Drive the pin in with a 12 pound 1U-7245 Sledge Hammer. The joint should be correctly aligned in order to prevent extreme impact to the hardened steel bearing. However, the entire weight of the machine is being forced together when the pin is driven into position. This force can cause the bearing to fracture from the impact.
Personal injury can result from flying debris. Chips or other debris can fly off objects when struck. Wear protective glasses in order to avoid injury to your eyes.
7. Use a wide blade screwdriver in order to push the seals back into the neutral position or tap on the end of the pin in order to view the seal moving back to the neutral position.Lubrication
1. Fill the joint using a high quality grease gun or the Caterpillar® hand pump and tank that is filled with EP oil that has been dyed red. The red oil will help to identify leaks in the joint.
Personal injury can result from oil under high pressure. DO NOT allow high pressure oil to contact skin. Wear appropriate protective equipment while working with high pressure oil systems.
2. Observe the position of the seals after the joint is filled to the top of the hex on the grease zerk. Again, Use the wide blade screwdriver in order to reposition the seals if they have bulged out of position.3. Remove any excess oil from the lubrication vent hole at the top of the end pin joint. The level in the joint should be at the top of the grease zerk hex head.4. Install the plug.Maintenance Interval
1. Check the end pin joint area once each day for visual leaks.2. Check the oil level at each engine oil change interval. Make sure the
