Preventive Maintenance
An electric motor often forms an important part of a larger installation. If supervised and maintained properly, the motor will give a reliable operational performance for a normal lifetime.The purpose of maintenance is to ensure that the motor will function reliably and without any unforeseen actions or interventions.To minimize equipment downtime, preventative maintenance and service actions must be planned and scheduled.Normal supervision of operation and maintenance includes the logging of operational and maintenance data. Motor load, bearing temperatures, winding temperatures, vibration, insulation resistance, and ambient conditions, are examples of the data that must be logged.After commissioning or maintenance, the supervision should be intensive. Temperature of bearings and windings, load, current, cooling, lubrication, and vibration must be checked frequently.This section provides recommendations regarding maintenance programs and work instructions on how to conduct common maintenance tasks.The instructions and recommendations provided should be read carefully, and used as a basis, when planning the maintenance program.The maintenance recommendations presented in this section represent only a minimum level of maintenance.By increasing the maintenance and supervision activities, the reliability of the motor, and the long-term availability, will increase.The data obtained during supervision and maintenance is useful for planning needed services and detecting potential problems. It is recommended that maintenance programs be designed and executed by qualified personnel only.To minimize down time, Caterpillar recommends that critical spare parts be kept in customer stock. The local Caterpillar dealer can assist with determining which parts to keep in stock.
