Introduction
Do not handle the water pumps until the entire Special Instruction has been read and understood.Correct handling of the water pump used on the serial numbers listed above is necessary. Improper handling of the water pump can cause cracking of the face seal group, resulting in very early hour failures.Water Pump Handling Procedures
Water pumps may leak as a result of damaged face seals. Relative movement between the shaft and the housing may allow the drive shaft to contact the face seal in the water pump. If contact occurs, the face seal will be damaged, and very early hour failures can result.

Do NOT move the water pump shaft (1) in respect to the water pump housing (5) .
NEVER handle the water pump by the shaft.
Use special care when removing the water pump from the shipping container.
The water pump should NEVER be set down with the shaft on the ground or other surface
Do NOT bump the shaft when installing the pump on the engine. Always use a hoist when installing the pump on the engine.
NEVER use a hammer, mount, or other device on the water pump or on the shaft which might cause movement between the shaft and the housing.
Do NOT use the installation tool as described in Service Magazine, SEPD0390. Use of the tool may result in loosening of the impeller. Use of the tool may cause failure of the water seal if the bolts are not tightened evenly.The new water pumps and reman water pumps are listed in Table 1.
