All SR5 generators have the same basic design. The following list explains some of the differences that may occur between SR5 generators:
Power for the exciter field is provided by the "Permanent Magnet Pilot Excited" (PMPE) method.
The location of the bearing can be on either side of the exciter, that is, the bearing can be located on the side of the exciter that is toward the input end of the rotor shaft or the bearing can be located on the side of the exciter that is toward the output end of the rotor shaft. The following factors determine the location of the bearing: vibration characteristics of the engine, vibration characteristics of the generator, the size of the engine and the size of the generator.
On PMPE generators, the pilot exciter will be outboard.
Power for the exciter may be provided by the "Internal Excitation" (IE). IE is provided by a set of unique coils that are installed in the main stator.Note: the input end of the generator is defined as the end of the generator that is connected to the engine. The output end of the generator is defined as the end of the generator where the diodes and PMG are located.
