Information:

(10) Torque for 16 bolts in carrier ... 475 50 N m (350 37 lb ft)(12) Torque for 12 bolts in pinion housing ... 270 25 N m (200 18 lb ft) Clean threads with Locquic Primer and apply Loctite 680 or similar thread lock to the following bolts prior to assembly.(14) Torque for 24 bolts in ring gear ... 270 25 N m (200 18 lb ft) Adjustment Procedures:1. Install pinion (1) in housing (8) complete with bearings.2. Install washer (6) and nut (7).3. While pinion (1) is slowly turned, tighten nut (7) to obtain a rolling torque of 1.1 to 2.3 N m (9.73 to 20.35 lb in). If the rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off 1/8 of a turn and re-torque. [For the rear group add 1.7 N m (15.04 lb in) to the above specification]. Check assembly for zero end play. Reduce preload torque 0.6 N m (5.31 lb in) for vehicles over 100 hours of operation.4. Stake nut (7) and install seal assembly (5) and yoke (2). Put retainer (3) in place and tighten bolt (4) to 475 50 N m (350 37 lb ft).5. Install pinion sub-assembly in carrier assembly with 80 percent of shim pack (11) and bevel gear group in carrier assembly with the axle centerline in the vertical position and the teeth of ring gear (13) toward the top.6. Torque one of two bolts in each bearing cap to 70 N m (50 lb ft), the other two at 5 N m (4 lb ft).7. Move adjusting nuts (9) and (15) to a position that maintains gear backlash, but not tight gear mesh and a slight bearing end play.8. Measure the torque required to rotate pinion (1) and record the measured torque.9. Move adjusting nut (15) while rotating bevel gear (13) to zero backlash position. Move adjusting nut (15) back to the nearest lock position. (Maximum back off movement one lug on adjusting nut).10. Move adjusting nut (9) until the torque to rotate pinion (1) is increased 0.6 to 1.1 N m (5.3 to 9.7 lb in) over pinion (1) torque in Step eight. This is the seated position.11. Move adjusting nut (9) three lugs to the nearest lock position.12. Measure the backlash between ring gear (13) and pinion gear (1). The backlash must be 0.36 0.13 mm (0.014 0.005 in).13. If the backlash does not meet specification, retract one nut the same amount the opposite nut is advanced to keep the bearing preload.14. Torque bearing cap bolts (17) to 1125 100 N m (820 75 lb ft).15. Measure overall rolling torque at pinion (1) and should read 3.9 to 7.3 N m (34.51 to 64.60 lb in) [For the rear group add 1.7 N m (15.04 lb in) to the above specification].16. After the backlash and preload adjustments have been made, the tooth contact between pinion (1) and ring gear (13) must then be checked.
