The installation procedures for the front axle shaft and for the rear axle shafts are identical. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before installation, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.1. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the axle shaft. Install the drive shaft in the final drive. 2. Slide Tooling (A) over the end of the axle shaft, as shown. Use Tooling (A) to guide the axle shaft in the splines of the differential. Remove Tooling (A). 3. Install thrust washer (8) and sun gear (7) on the end of axle shaft (5). Align the sun gear with the planetary gears and slide the sun gear completely onto the axle shaft. It may be necessary to rotate the wheel assembly in order to align the sun gear with the planetary gears. If the axle assembly and the tires are still installed on the machine, the tire must be raised off the ground in order to rotate the wheel assembly. 4. Use Tooling (B) to install retaining ring (6). 5. Install O-ring seal (4). 6. Install cover (2) and nine bolts (1). Tighten nine bolts (1) to a torque of 100 20 N*m (75 15 lb ft).7. Fill the final drive with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change" for the machine that is being serviced. End By:a. Install the tire and rim.
