Several new tools are available for servicing the differentials for both the front and the rear axles on the above models. These tools help the serviceman perform the following operations.
Determine the shim pack thickness for the pinion.
Measure the backlash for the differential and bevel gear, and adjust the backlash for the differential and bevel gears.
Remove the pinion nut and install the pinion nut. Pinion Setting Tool The pinion setting tool helps the serviceman measure a specific depth that is required for calculating the shim pack thickness for the pinion. The pinion setting tool provides a flat surface that is easy to measure against with a depth micrometer. Differential Setting Tool The differential setting tool also helps the serviceman easily measure another dimension that is required for calculating the shim pack thickness for the pinion. Spanner Wrench Assembly The serviceman uses the spanner wrench assembly to adjust spanner nuts that set the backlash for the pinion and bevel gear. The spanner wrench assembly and the backlash tool are used together for adjusting the backlash. Wrench The tool helps the serviceman measure the backlash on the front axle differential. This wrench and the spanner wrench assembly are used together for adjusting the backlash for the pinion and bevel gear. Adjusting Tool Group The tool helps the serviceman adjust preload on the pinion bearing. Shaft The shaft provides a flat surface for easy measurement of the distance from the axis of the differential bearings to the base of the bearing for the pinion. The shaft and two discs are used together. Disc The discs fit inside the bearing nuts in order to support the shaft. Together, the discs and the shaft locate the axis of the differential bearings.
