The oscillating axle must be locked while work tools are being used to prevent damage of the machine. The oscillating axle must be locked before the boom and the stick are removed in order to prevent tipping of the machine.
The service brake pedal is used to operate the service brakes. To activate the oscillating axle and the service brakes, fully depress the service brake pedal.

Do not operate the work tool over the side of the machine without locking the oscillating axle. If any movement occurs in the oscillating axle, the oscillating axle cannot be locked.
To deactivate the oscillating axle and the service brakes, depress the small pedal that is located to the left of the service brake pedal.Note: When the service brake pedal is disengaged, the oscillating axle is unlocked unless the oscillating axle lock switch is in the ON position. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls" for further information.
