Remove the rear axle housing and the differential. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rear Axle Housing and Differential - Remove".
Remove the axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove two bolts (2) and the washers. Remove cover (1) and the shims.

Install a 3/8 inch - 16 NC eyebolt into pin (3). Remove pin (3) and the O-ring seal from the axle housing assembly.

Put identification on all tube assemblies for installation purposes.
Remove bolt (5), the washer and the clip from the support assembly. Remove two tube assemblies (8) from the rear axle housing.
Remove two tube assemblies (4) from the rear axle housing.
Repeat Steps 4 and 6 for the remaining tube assemblies on the remaining side of the rear axle housing.
Remove slack adjuster (7). Remove the two bolts and the washers that hold manifold (6) to the rear axle housing. Remove manifold (6).
Position a suitable lifting sling around support assembly (9), as shown. Attach the lifting sling to a hoist. Use the hoist to position the rear axle housing, as shown.
Remove Tool (A) from the rear axle housing.
Position Tooling (B) and Tool (C) under the rear axle housing, as shown.
Remove 12 bolts (10) and the washers. Remove support assembly (9) from the rear axle housing. The weight of support assembly (9) is 250 kg (550 lb).

Install Tooling (D) to differential and bevel gear (11). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (D). Attach the lifting device to a hoist. Remove the 16 bolts and the washers that hold differential and bevel gear (11) to the rear axle housing. Install three 3/4 inch 10 NC forcing bolts (X) into differential and bevel gear (11). Tighten forcing bolts (X) evenly in order to loosen differential and bevel gear (11) from the rear axle housing.
Remove differential and bevel gear (11) from the rear axle housing. The weight of differential and bevel gear (11) is 400 kg (880 lb).
Remove the O-ring seal from differential carrier assembly (11).
