You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures. The choice to continue running or to overhaul the engine is yours. However, according to the Maintenance Management Schedule, it's time to have your engine overhauled. However, with the exception of burning a little oil and experiencing a slight increase in fuel consumption, you are not having any other problems with your truck. The figures shown in the following scenario are based on certain assumptions for the purpose of presenting an example only.Your truck has 180,000 miles (290 000 km) on its 3208 Engine. If the truck runs for 25,000 more miles (40 000 km) and then fails, the repair cost will be between U.S. $.024 and U.S. $.035 per mile (km). If you choose to repair your engine before a failure occurs (by performing an in-frame overhaul at a cost of U.S. $2500) the repair cost will only be U.S. $.014 per mile (km). The difference between the repair before failure cost and the after failure cost is the result of possible damage to other engine parts when a major failure occurs.By NOT performing an overhaul, you risk the chance of seizing a piston, breaking a rod, fatiguing a bearing or causing other severe damage to your engine. The cost to repair this damage could range from U.S. $4000 to $8000 and the amount of downtime encountered would exceed the time required for a scheduled in-frame overhaul.Consider the alternatives: Spend U.S. $2500 to overhaul your engine, with minimal downtime, before failure, or spend U.S. $4000 to $8000 in repairs, with several days of unscheduled downtime, after the engine fails. It is evident by this example, that overhauling your engine before failure is far less costly than the cost to overhaul your engine after failure. To further stress the importance of overhauling your engine before failure, an Engine Operating Cost Analysis was made to show the cost per mile (km) graphically. These graphs do not include the total downtime, lost contracts, towing, replacement vehicle and related costs associated with after failure repairs. Legend
Dotted Line - The cost per mile (km) for a truck that is not maintained and overhauled as recommended by Caterpillar. Solid Line - The cost per mile (km) for a truck that is maintained and overhauled before failure. As illustrated in the graph, the cost per mile (km) for a truck that is not maintained and overhauled as recommended will ultimately cost more to operate than a truck that is maintained and overhauled before failure.Caterpillar strongly recommends that you overhaul your engine before failure.Overhaul Programs
Although your Caterpillar dealer may be offering a variety of options regarding overhaul programs, Caterpillar recommends that an In-Frame Overhaul be performed at this maintenance interval.Overhaul Before Failure (In-Frame Overhaul)
A planned in-frame overhaul may be your best value, because you can: * Avoid costly unplanned downtime* Reuse as many
