Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem

Premature wear service brakes

Dog clutch and output shaft spline
Reports have been received that the rear axle service brake prematurely wears out on the machines listed above as shown in Illustration 1.High iron content and noise do not mean premature wear on the service brakes or parts. The differential lock when engaged at a higher speed causes dog clutch teeth failure or the output shaft spline failure in the differential as shown in Illustration 2.The differential lock failure is not covered on the CPI number #385589.Note: Make sure to advise the operator/customer not to engage the differential lock above 4.0 km/h (2.5 mph). Catastrophic failure may occur.Solution
Follow the procedure for inspection and feedback of the rear axle service brake:
Start the engine.
Lower the stabilizers and lift the rear wheels 150.0 mm (5.90 inch) off the ground.
Use the bucket hydraulic control to lower the bucket to the ground and use the bucket to raise the front wheels 150.0 mm (5.90 inch) off the ground.
Engage third gear and put the direction control lever in the forward position or in the REVERSE position.
Run the engine at low idle.
Check if the rear wheels are rotating freely without applying the service brake.
If the rear wheels are rotating freely, then continue to the next step.
If the rear wheels are stuck and not moving, then remove the rear axle for evaluation.
Apply the service brake and check for noise.
If noise noticed when applying the service brake, then change the oil and repeat Step 1 to Step 7.
If noise is not noticed, then release the machine for operation.
Run the axle for several minutes for the oil to circulate in the axle and obtain two oil samples from the old oil and check for large debris particles and water contamination.Note: Supply an oil sample at the time of feedback.
Provide the following information through the CPI Feedback tool in the Service Information Management System (SIMS) referencing CPI number #385589:
Machine serial number
Machine SMU
Axle serial number
Machine Application: slope, roading, usage of loading versus trenching

Any other additional informationNote: For machines with prefix LBF and LBS, CAT MTO is the only type of oil recommended. Do not use oil additive.Note: There is no need to fill oil in the rear axle final drives. There is a communication channel between the differential and the final drives.
