Diagnostic Trouble Code for Engine Overspeed
CDL Code Description Information About the Code
E362-1 Engine Overspeed - Level 1 The engine has exceeded the value that is programmed into the Electronic Control Module (ECM) for 0.6 seconds.
There are no diagnostic trouble codes for the speed/timing sensors.
The engine has been running for at least 3 seconds.
E362-3 Engine Overspeed - Level 3 The engine has exceeded the value that is programmed into the Electronic Control Module (ECM) for 0.6 seconds.
There are no diagnostic trouble codes for the speed/timing sensors.
The engine has been running for at least 3 seconds.
The engine may shut down. The ECM limits the flow of fuel in order to prevent the engine speed from exceeding the value that is programmed into the ECM. When the engine speed has dropped to less than the value that is programmed into the ECM, the 190-15 code will be reset.If the engine speed exceeds the value that is programmed into the ECM, the ECM illuminates the warning lamp and a 190-15 code is logged. Factory passwords are required in order to clear the code. No troubleshooting is required.The history of engine overspeeds can be viewed on the electronic service tool.Probable Causes

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Proceeding Down Steep Grades (If Applicable)
A. Slow the machine and select a lower gear before proceeding down a steep grade.
Steep grades
Result: Steep grades can be the cause of the overspeed.
Control the engine speed during steep grades.
Result: Steep grades are not the cause of the overspeed.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Turbocharger
Note: The turbocharger that is installed on the engine is a nonserviceable item. If any mechanical fault exists, then the faulty turbocharger must be replaced.
A. Check for any oil that may be leaking into the intake air.
Turbocharger
Result: The turbocharger is leaking oil into the intake air.
Replace the turbocharger.
Result: The turbocharger is not leaking oil into the intake air.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Combustible Gases or Liquid in the Intake Air
A. Check for combustible gases in the surrounding atmosphere.
B. Check for combustible liquid in the air intake.
C. Check for correct operation of the ether starting aid (if equipped).
Air quality
Result: The atmosphere has combustible gases.
Do not operate the engine in an environment with combustible gases.
Result: There is combustible liquid in the air intake.
Remove the liquid. Investigate and rectify the cause of liquid ingestion
Result: Ether is being injected into the intake air.
Test the ether starting aid. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Ether Starting Aid - Test".
Result: The intake air does not contains combustible gases.
Contact the Technical Communicator at a Cat dealer.
