Calculating the Distance between Pins (1) Left Pin (2) Right Pin (3) Pi Tape (A) Distance between centers of pins (B) Diameter of pinThe Pi Tape is intended to measure the circumference of a round object. The distance from the center of pin to center of pin must be calculated to determine the center to center distance or callout (A).
First, measure the total distance around both extended or retracted pins using the Pi Tape and multiply by 3.14.
Next, subtract the circumference of one pin: B (B) x 3.14 from the value above. B x 3.14 is shown as calculation C in table 4.
Finally, divide the remainder by 2 to get dimension (A). This is your final dimension.
Record this dimension as your actual retracted or extended length in either table 5 or 6.

Table 4
B x Pi = Pin Circumference = C
384-3757 Steering Cylinder Gauge Group     76.2 x 3.14 = 239.27
384-3760 Steering Cylinder Gauge Group     76.2 x 3.14 = 239.27

Calculate Center to Center Dimension A - Retracted Length
Left Cylinder
[(Pi Tape Measurement x Pi) - C] /2     Retracted Length = A
[(____ x 3.14) - ____] / 2
Right Cylinder
[(Pi Tape Measurement x Pi) - C] / 2     Retracted Length = A
[(____ x 3.14) - ____] / 2
Table 6
Table 6
Calculate Center to Center Dimension A - Retracted Length
Left Cylinder
[(Pi Tape Measurement x Pi) - C] / 2     Extended Length = A
[(____ x 3.14) - ____] / 2
Right Cylinder
[(Pi Tape Measurement x Pi) - C] / 2     Extended Length = A
[(____ x 3.14) - ____] / 2        Pi Tape dimension in millimeters multiplied by 3.14 minus 239.27 divided by 2 = final dimension.
Multiply the average Pi Tape measurement recorded in step 3d by 3.14.
Subtract 239.27 from that number.
Divide that number by 2.
This number is the final dimension. Record this dimension as the actual retracted length.Example: (521.34 mm multiplied by 3.14) minus 239.27 divided by 2 = 698.86mm.
Use air or hydraulic pressure to completely extend the cylinder.Note: Make sure that the cylinder rod is completely extended. This is critical for accurate measurement.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 to accurately determine the extended length dimension.
Install the bearing into the rod eye.Note: For more information on installing the rod eye bearing, refer to RENR9704 Steering Cylinder Disassembly and Assembly manual.Reading the Pi Tape
Note: Make sure the Pi Tape and the gauge pins are free from dirt or debris before taking any measurements. Each line on the Gauge Member (top) of the tape represents 25mm of diameter. Each line on the Vernier (bottom) of the tape represents 0.5 mm.
