Remove hose (5) from the piston pump (work tool). Pour hydraulic oil into the hose until the hose is full. Attach hose (5) to the piston pump (work tool). Hose (5) supplies the bank valve with oil.
For the 228 Skid Steer Loader, remove the port from the side of the piston pump (work tool). For the 228 Skid Steer Loader, pour 0.5 L (0.5 qt) of hydraulic oil into the piston pump (work tool). Install the port. For the 248 Skid Steer Loader, remove fill port (6) on the piston pump (work tool). Fill the piston pump (work tool) with oil. For the 248 Skid Steer Loader, pour 1.0 L (1.1 qt) of hydraulic oil into the piston pump (work tool). Install fill port (6) .
Remove the cap from the hydraulic tank. Fill the hydraulic tank. Be sure that the level is at the halfway point in the sight gauge.
Install one 6V-4143 Coupler Assembly to each end of the 177-7860 Hose. Install one 6V-3989 Unvalved Nipple to 8T-0855 Pressure Gauge. Install one 8T-0855 Pressure Gauge with range 0 to 4000 kPa (580 psi) to one end of the 177-7860 Hose .

Install the other end of the hose assembly to charge pressure tap (7) .
Start the engine and run the engine at LOW idle.
Look at the pressure gauge. The pressure should read 2900 100 kPa (420 15 psi) within 15 seconds of start-up. If the pressure is low, stop the engine. Check the hydraulic oil level in the tank. Determine the cause for low charge oil pressure before you restart the engine.Note: If charge pressure is not reached within 15 seconds, damage to the hydrostatic system will occur. Do not allow the hydrostatic system to operate with incorrect charge system pressures.Flushing The Hydrostatic System
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Flushing of the entire hydrostatic system should be performed after a failure of a component or after a replacement of a component. If the oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated oil can also contribute to overheating. Use the following procedure to sample the oil in the system.Flush the Drive Lines
Raise the cab and disconnect the solenoid for the parking brake switch. For the 228 Skid Steer Loader, refer to the Operation
